ACO Portfolio: Gold Coast Highway, Tugun

January 23, 2013

Gold Coast Highway

The connection road between the Gold Coast Highway, Tugun and the recently completed Tugun Bypass, underwent a realignment. Designers had to rearrange the existing stormwater, sewer, electrical and communication infrastructure services.

The associated changes affected the cross fall of the road surface. Subsequently, surface water had to be intercepted and removed efficiently without interruption to other services.

Designers selected ACO’s PowerDrain trench drainage system. ACO’s technical department provided documented advice on an appropriately size trench drain which only required a single point of connection to the stormwater network over the drain’s entire run length.

Product details

  • Specifier: Queensland Transport and Main Roads (Roadtek Division)
  • Product featured: PowerDrain S200K with Slotted ductile iron grates

UK Pay and Display Machines in Shipment to Malaysia

January 23, 2013

A further shipment of UK manufactured pay and display parking machines is on its way to South-East Asia. The export order has been won by Swindon-based Metric Group Ltd for an extension of a parking project in a suburb of the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.

The order for the 27 Elite pay and display machines follows the shipment of 82 similar machines last year to the city of Petaling Jaya and brings the total population of Metric machines in Malaysia to more than 1,000.

The latest batch is being shipped as part of a planned programme for installation in early January 2013.

Metric Group Export Manager Mike Hewett praised the part played by the Metric Group’s Malaysian distributor My One Solution.

He continued: “Local authorities in Malaysia are very keen on the concept of pay and display as a means of controlling the substantial demand for on-street parking.

“This latest shipment is one of many Metric have made to Malaysia over the last 15 years. As far as I am aware, Metric has been selling this type of pay and display technology to Malaysia for longer than almost anyone else.”

ODOT launches new website for real-time traffic updates

January 23, 2013

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) in the US has unveiled a new website, Ohgo.com, which is designed to provide travellers with real-time traffic information.

Ohgo.com offers users up-to-date travel information with the help of the latest technology deployed on the state’s roads.

ODOT director Jerry Wray said that the price travellers pay for sitting in traffic is important.

“Ohgo.com will allow motorists to log on, look for traffic tie-ups and pick the best route; saving both time and money,” Wray added.

Developed for multiple user platforms such as mobile phones, tablets and desktop computers, the website is interactive and user-friendly, and it officially replaces the state’s current travel information site, BuckeyeTraffic.org.

Ohgo.com provides information on current highway traffic speeds, traffic accidents, slowdowns, tie-ups, travel times from one location to another, road construction, closures and delays.

The site also offers live traffic camera feeds in order to view up-to-date travel conditions as they happen and winter road conditions from November through April, each season.

According to ODOT, the future updates for Ohgo.com will allow motorists to map daily commutes and receive real-time updates at times when accidents, slowdowns or closures occur.

However, the department has currently not set a timeframe for the start of the updates.

In May 2011, ODOT launched a website with real-time traffic flow updates for various key metro areas across the state.

Petrowest bags contract to complete twinning of Canadian highway

January 23, 2013

The Government of Alberta in Canada has signed a $78m contract with Petrowest Construction, the construction division of energy services and infrastructure firm Petrowest, to build the final stretch in the twinning of Highway 43 between Valleyview and Grande Prairie.

The new contract with Petrowest will build the final 20km of the 432km-long four-lane stretch of Highway 43 from Grande Prairie to the junction of Highway 16 west of Edmonton.

The contract, which is part of a partnership arrangement between the Alberta Government and the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, is scheduled to be completed in the 2014.

This partnership also includes development of new highway lanes, two pedestrian underpasses, bridges and culverts over Goose Creek and Pelican Creek through the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, west of Valleyview.

The development of new highway lanes is expected to commence in February 2013 with completion expected next autumn.

Alberta Minister of Transportation Ric McIver said that the project, when completed, will provide northwest Alberta with a fully twinned, safe and efficient roadway to move people and goods.

“Partnering with the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation and Petrowest Construction LP on this project provides good value for the money, builds economic opportunities for First Nation members during and after construction, and delivers on a promise to residents of north-western Alberta to complete this twinning work,” McIver added.

Petrowest is a Canada-based company involved in pre-drilling and post-completion energy services, as well as industrial and civil infrastructure projects, gravel crushing and hauling for non-energy sector customers.

Its primary operations are based in the Grande Prairie area of northern Alberta and in north-eastern British Columbia.

IBM and German city complete smarter traffic pilot

January 23, 2013

IBM and the City of Cologne in Germany have announced the new traffic pilot, which forecasts and manages the city’s traffic flow and congestion, has been completed.

The advanced transportation management software uses analytics technology to show the ways in which the city of Cologne can foresee, manage, and in some cases, avoid traffic jams and trouble spots across the city.

As a part of the pilot, IBM transportation experts and researchers teamed up with the City of Cologne to analyse data from its traffic monitoring stations for a period of six weeks with the help of the IBM Traffic Prediction Tool and IBM Intelligent Transportation solutions.

The city’s traffic engineers and IBM could predict traffic volume and flow with more than 90% accuracy and 30 minutes in advance.

This capability would help travellers to plan ahead, decide whether they should leave at a different time, plan an alternate route or use a different mode of transportation

Cologne Traffic Control Center director Thomas Weil said that the results of the traffic prediction pilot are very encouraging.

“Having the ability to create actionable insight from the traffic monitoring data gives us an ability to better manage congestion, as well as provide citizens with more precise traffic information,” he added.

Cologne, which is considered as one of the first congestion-prone large cities with increasing in traffic density, is looking out for new ways to better manage and optimise traffic flow, as well as increase the capacity of its transportation networks.

The city’s traffic command centre generally collects real-time data from around 150 monitoring stations and 20 traffic cameras on the roads, highways and at intersections.

However, it currently does not possess advanced traffic management tools or a way to predict future traffic flow.

The pilot is expected to help the traffic command centre to optimise the current traffic flow, while anticipating and planning for potential traffic incidents.

According to IBM, intelligent traffic management based on precise forecasting techniques will help cities forecast and avoid traffic congestion and reduce the volume of traffic, resulting in a more sustainable transportation network.

India to build new 357km Delhi-Ludhiana Expressway

January 23, 2013

India is set to construct a six-lane expressway that will connect Ludhiana in the state of Punjab with the capital Delhi, at an estimated cost of $200bn ($3.68bn).

The new 357km Delhi-Ludhiana Expressway, which is expected to reduce the distance between the two cities by almost 50km, has received approval from the states of Delhi, Punjab and Haryana. The route map for the new project will be finalised by February 2013.

India’s Road Transport and Highways Minister C P Joshi told reporters that the cost of the expressway per km will be around Rs400m ($7.3m), as well as Rs50bn ($919.3m) that will be invested on land acquisition.

The new expressway will start from outer Delhi and feature a 266km-long stretch that passes through the Sonipat, Safidon, Asandh, Kaithal districts in Haryana and Samana and Nabha districts in Punjab. It will also include a 91km-long node to ease connectivity to Chandigarh.

Joshi said that townships will be allowed develop alongside the expressway nodes and will be given exclusive connectivity to the new road.

“We would discuss the cross subsidy model from real estate for funding the project once the alignment is finalised,” he added.

“We have also appointed PWD Secretaries of the three states as the nodal officers for the expressway project,” the minister said.

The new expressway is one of the seven expressways announced by the government under the flagship highways building programme NHDP VI.

In October 2011, the government had granted approval for the construction of 1,000km of expressways in the country.
